Russia attacks Ukraine

By Litzy Cortes

Starting in 2021 and moving into 2022, the Russian president has been making threats to enter Ukraine and take them over. The world believed this was all talk from the Russian president, Vladimir Putin, but we later discovered he was serious. Russia was against NATO; everyone thought he was making silly little threats. On February 24, 2022, the world realized that we had taken his word for granted. Putin authorizes Russian military operations to go into Ukraine. The Russian army operations begin with missile and artillery attacks in cities in Ukrainian cities like Kyiv. When the first attack on Ukraine occurred, the world was in shock; although this world has seen war, this generation was not. Now that technology is accessible to all, videos are circling the internet of bombs landing on towns, people running, children crying, mother’s looking for their children, and people dying immediately because of the impact.

Other countries were cutting ties with Russia because of Putin's decision; Russian citizens began to move out of their homes and take their savings out of the banks; food sources were not delivering goods to Russia. The world was cutting Russia out. There was a point where Russian citizens were not allowed to leave Russia at all. Could you imagine the emotions running through their bodies, desperation, anxiety, and just wanting to survive?  It's like being stuck in a cage, not being fed for a week, and just a few inches away, there is a plate of food, but you cannot get to it for some reason. That level of desperation is what they must have been feeling.

One afternoon as I was getting home from school, the news was on, and they showed the public a video of doctors carrying a young girl no older than ten on a stretcher. They showed how they tried to revive the young girl, but they couldn’t, not only because they were too late but because they had limited resources. Not only were children dying, but older adults, pregnant women, and PEOPLE IN GENERAL!! There was death all around.

Watching these videos and seeing these images was a reality check for me and the whole world. Putin’s threats were not only stupid words. This generation has read of war and had seen old videos of past fights; we’ve seen pictures, but this was real; this war was in our lifetime. Yes, it was in Ukraine, but we could be next in a matter of moments.  Putin was not only hurting the people of Ukraine, but he was also hurting his people. On the social media platform, Tiktok, there are video showing Russian citizens helping injured Ukraine soldiers and providing them with shelter and food. This was Putin's war, not Russia’s.

Putin believed taking over Ukraine would be easy, but the soldiers proved he was wrong. Ukraine soldier is taking back their country little by little, city by city. Although we would think that because Putin is losing so many soldiers, he will pull back and would not continue that insane mission of taking Ukraine and other countries on his list. Putin attacked Ukraine once again with 90 missiles, but this time it crossed over the Ukraine border and into Poland, killing two Poland citizens. There is doubt that the missile was coming from Russia, possibly from Ukraine. Maybe it was a mistake that cost two lives.

With our luck, things can get a lot worse real quick. The last couple of years have not been the best, and we don’t seem to be getting and light at the end of the tunnel. And our flashlight is running out of battery, and we didn't pack another set of batteries. Let me not jink it, just in case.
